at the hands of Bahamut), but in general it is very manageable thanks to the chain mechanic and the hot spring to the left of the base camp.Įither way, I’m ready to jump right back into the game, so stay tuned for the next full review tomorrow – or the next day, depending on the difficulty of the game. It’s pretty easy to die from being caught in a merciless trap, or maybe wandering around the wrong area before being prepared (or the wrong boss, as I learned from my 10+ deaths. Like I said earlier, however, the fight itself isn’t that difficult. I thought it was something to brag about, but now this game humiliates me more than I ever imagined. Just for a bit of context on my own abilities (which I’m now questioning) I’m the kind of guy who’s played all of the Metroid and Metroidvania out there, and was more than fairly proficient in all of them. Right now, in fact, I have absolutely no idea where to go next. hidden which is now accessible with some recently acquired items (luckily going back doesn’t take much time, as areas become much easier to navigate with the items you acquire later in the game, as well as the shortcuts that you open). There have been many times where I have found myself in a dead end and had to go back (later in the game luckily distort) to previous locations to look for missing clues or maybe a semi area. If there is one thing I can complain about about the game at this point, it’s this: it’s really hard! I’m not talking so much about the fight as it is about the puzzles. Plus, these bosses are so tough that you’ll feel really accomplished for defeating them – especially if you don’t abuse secondary weapons like shurikens and go for the good old whip … or even the knife instead (watch- you, mr. Boss encounters are quite rare and very difficult to access, but that only makes their search more cathartic. You always seem to get new clues, use previous clues to solve new puzzles, and find new items. In more general terms, I can say that the rhythm is on the spot. There are a lot of domains, and you’re going to have to explore them all. With the items you have acquired you will explore other areas of the game, use the clues you read earlier to solve more puzzles, acquire better weapons, fight harder bosses, and uncover more areas. You then choose if you want to explore those other areas or if you stay in your area to solve more puzzles and possibly beat that area’s keeper. In general, the flow of the game is as follows: you enter the ruins, explore a bit, learn clues, solve puzzles, kill enemies, and find entrances to other areas deeper in the ruins.

I’m talking about Aria of Sorrow or Harmony of Dissonance La Mulana is a lot like these games, if they were designed for the SNES or the PC Engine. It’s actually awfully similar to a Metroidvania game – a real Metroidvania game, I mean.

So what is it all about? Exploration, action and puzzles. Now that I’ve played the PC version of the La Mulana remake for over 10 hours, I’m blown away how much I enjoy it. In a way, I had always been caught up with the quality of Cave Story, and in my mind, I thought it was the only free-to-play game that could be this great, when in fact I should have thought in the completely opposite direction.

I’ve known the free version of La Mulana for a long time, but it never occurred to me to try it.
